OK, I put my hands up and proudly and loudly admit that I am a social media junkie ….. there, I’ve said it. A day cannot go by without me scrolling through twitter, Facebook and now Instagram on my phone or laptop. I love when I check my phone first thing in the morning and I have ‘notices’! I get so excited to see who has ‘liked’ my latest picture or blog, who has commented or who has re-tweeted one of my tweets.

Yes, I agree social media can and does suck up a lot of our lives now, it can be hard to limit the time once you start. I will admit that I waste a lot of hours snooping on Facebook (admit it, we all do it 😉 ) and conversing on Twitter but it does have huge benefits.

Facebook is a great tool to connect and keep in contact with family and friends. I have one brother living in New York and my other brother recently moved to Dubai and after living in New York for ten years in the 90’s I have many beloved friends stateside too, so social media makes the miles apart much shorter. It’s lovely to see how their children are growing and how everyone’s lives are changing. Our conversations may be short and sweet, it may be the odd comment or a little ‘like’ but it’s nice to know that we are all thinking of each other.

Social media has been a huge benefit to my business, it’s great for promoting new products, events and services, it’s FREE and well worth the hours. Most of my caricature orders from both near and far come through Facebook.

Last week I was delighted to receive an order for five caricatures from a company in Cork whom received my contact details through a Twitter contact (@ABSales1). I produced, mounted and framed five different caricatures that were presented as awards at a company award ceremony (a very novel and unique idea).

So you see, I’m not really wasting all my precious hours on social media for nothing, it is very useful both socially and businesslike. Thanks again Niall Kenny (aka @ABSales1 on twitter) for making the connection on twitter and keep connecting everyone, it’s worth it 😉
