This week the national radio station Today FM are traveling around Ireland showcasing different holiday locations with live outside broadcasts. Waterford City was featured on Monday and along with Oonagh, my Galánta Events business partner, we went to the Bishops Palace Cafe to watch the legendary radio DJ Tony Fenton in action.

The Delorentos were the house band and they were brilliant live. They played three tunes and opened the show with a beautiful and emotional performance of Petardu. The lead singer explained that he was adopted and based on his feelings and emotions this song was created. Here’s a video I took of them performing.

While I was tweeting photos and comments during the live broadcast, one of the producers noticed my tweets. I was approached and asked if I could create a caricature of Tony Fenton live. Of course I had no pencils or materials with me so they produced a pen and paper and Oonagh managed to find some well worn colouring pencils in the cafe.

Now, you know the saying ….. “a bad workman blames it’s tools” well, it’s not entirely true, is it? I was so nervous, even my hand was shaking while I drew, but I did manage to create some sort of a caricature with Tony, a mic in one hand and a plate with a blaa in the other. (It wasn’t my finest work so I was a bit disappointed with that.) Earlier that morning I created a fun caricature of Tony and had planned on giving it to him as a gift, but as luck would have it, my printer decided to die! 🙁

However, towards the end of the two hour show I was delighted when Tony Fenton briefly interviewed me and we had a quick banter. It was brilliant, can’t remember for the life of me what I said and have no idea how I sounded, but I do remember that for some reason I wasn’t nervous and I really enjoyed it. It made my day, my week and above all, I was overjoyed to have my 30 seconds of fame!!! 🙂 🙂
